Popular Model Making Genres

Unsure about which components to choose for your model lighting project? We've added this section to make selecting components easier, based on popular model making themes, and acts as a simple picking list.

Its also worth checking out the main Components Section overview page HERE, as there may be solutions better suited to the project that you hadn't considered.

Below are shortcuts to categories that may be useful to your specific theme.

1) Book Nook Lighting

Whether creating a layered shadow box or building a more intricately detailed kit, lighting can add an extra atmospheric dimension to your design.

For a shadow box, back-lighting is usually required to create the silhouette effect. Larger sized LEDs are useful for this. Consider positioning the LED so that the main part of the lens is diffused or completely hidden, and make use of light shining from the side of the lens to create a halo effect - you can even combine LED colours for more depth.

Alongside this, if there's a section of the design to which you'd like to draw the viewers eye - eg a character or building, consider using smaller micro LEDs as up-lighters placed in front of these. Again the main glare of the light can be angled away to create a more subtle effect if required.

More complicated miniatures may also benefit from small prewired light fittings to create a realistic 3D effect in the foreground, moving to 2D panels or mirror effects towards the rear of the diorama.

Picking List

The categories below would be my initial go-to choice for general Book Nook and similar miniature diorama builds, but many other options are available in the main COMPONENT STORE section which may also be suitable:

1) Micro LEDs

2) 3mm Prewired LEDs

3) 5mm Prewired LEDs

4) Flexible LED Filament

5) Ceramic LED Filament

6) 3mm Flicker Effect LEDs

7) 5mm Flicker Effect LEDs

8) Power Distribution

9) Battery Boxes
